FilmForum includes gay and lesbian youth film

The second annual Cleveland FilmForum takes place the weekend of November 5-7, presented by the Cleveland Film Society, at Hoyts Cinemas in Tower City. This is a unique program of film and discussion about timely social issues.

This year the theme is "Kids at Issue: Risks and Promise," and five films will be shown relating to the topic, each followed by moderated audience discussions. Three of the films are Cleveland premieres, including Out: Stories of Lesbian and Gay Youth, a 1993 film directed by David Adkin.

Breaking the walls of silence surrounding the issues of sexual orientation among gay and lesbian youth, Out offers a forum for gay teens and their families to speak candidly about their own experiences, and explores how these young people deal with their sexuality at a time when so much in their lives is already confusing and overwhelming. Among the issues explored are those of alienation, ignorance, isolation, and abuse, problems faced daily by most gay teens. Out is a positive film about living one's life honestly, with pride and dignity, rather than in shame and fear.

In the forum discussion that follows, two member of PRYSM (Presence and Respect for Youth in Sexual Minority), the Center's support program for lesbians and gays 22 and under, will speak about their experiences growing up gay. Director David Adkin has also been invited. Out: Stories of Lesbian

and Gay Youth will be shown at 8 pm on Saturday, Nov. 6.

Other films and discussions in the proinclude: A Home of our Own, a Clevegram land premiere starring Kathy Bates in a drama that explores single-parent perseverance, Friday, Nov. 5 at 7:30 pm; School Ties, the Robert Mandel film about anti-Semitism in a prep school and the stand that a Jewish student must take, followed by a discussion led by Howard Williams, an African-American student at St. Ignatius High School, and Laura Lingsley-Hong, a member of the National Conference on Christians and Jews, Saturday, Nov. 6 at 5 pm; Something Within Me, a Jerrett Engle film exploring the musical grade school curriculum at St. Augustine's School of the Arts in the South Bronx, Sunday, Nov. 7 at 5 pm; and the Cleveland premiere of Where the Day Takes You, a 1992 film with an ensemble cast, about teenaged runaways trying to survive on the streets of Los Angeles, with the discussion moderated by Lynn Bryan/Norsetter, program director at Safe Space, Cleveland's crisis shelter for teens, Sunday, Nov. 7 at 7 pm.

Dr. Albert Johnson, Professor of Cinema Studies in the African-American Studies Department at the University of California, Berkeley, will act as moderator for the FilmForum. Tickets for each film & discussion are $6, with discounts for seniors and students at the door. For more information call 349-FILM.
